Behind Namaste Artisans: Handmade Felt Decor, Hemp Footwear and Fair Trade from Nepal
When you buy a felt ornament or a pair of hemp shoes, you’re not just buying “a product”. You’re choosing who and what you support.
Namaste Artisans started with a simple idea: beautiful, useful things made fairly – from Nepal to your home in Australia and beyond.
In this first journal post, we want to introduce who we are, what we make and why felt and hemp matter for the planet (and for the people who craft them).
Who we are: a Nepal–Australia bridge for handmade

Namaste Artisans works directly with felt and hemp workshops in Nepal. Many of the makers are women who support their families through this work.
Our role is simple but important:
- We co-design products that actually sell in real homes – not just look cute in photos.
- We make sure workers are paid fairly, work in safe spaces and use materials we’re proud of.
- We handle the boring logistics – shipping, customs, quality checks – so you get consistent, repeatable quality.
We’re based in Australia, but our heart is in the workshops: the hands rolling felt balls, stitching cat caves and sewing hemp shoes.
Why felt? Soft, durable and seriously underrated

Wool felt is one of those materials that has been around forever, but most people only see it in kids’ crafts. Used properly, it’s insanely practical.
We use 100% wool felt for:
- Felt ornaments – soft, colourful and kid + pet friendly for your Christmas tree.
- Felt cat caves and beds – cosy, breathable hides that keep their shape.
- Felt trivets, coasters and placemats – thick enough to protect your table from heat and scratches.
- Wool dryer balls – a simple swap away from single-use dryer sheets.
Why we like felt:
- Naturally insulating – keeps warmth in, cushions against knocks.
- Durable – dense wool felt doesn’t fray like cheap fabrics.
- Soft but strong – safe for kids’ hands and pets’ paws.
- Low-waste – offcuts can be turned into smaller items like felt balls and ornaments.
When you see a felt trivet or ornament in our shop, you’re seeing hours of rolling, shaping and stitching by hand – not a factory conveyor belt.
Why hemp? Everyday shoes with a lighter footprint

If felt is our “soft” hero material, hemp is the strong one.
We use hemp fabric for:
- Hemp shoes and boots – casual daily shoes with a hemp upper, cotton lining and natural rubber sole.
- Hemp slippers and sandals – easy slip-ons for home, travel or weekends.
Why hemp works for footwear:
- Breathable – helps keep feet cooler and less sweaty.
- Durable – tough natural fibre that holds up to everyday wear.
- Lower impact – hemp generally needs less water and fewer chemicals than many conventional fibres.
- Easy to style – neutral, earthy texture that pairs with jeans, linen and everyday outfits.
We focus on simple, repeatable designs: shoes you actually want to wear all week, not just once for a photo.
Fair trade in real life, not just a label
“Ethical” and “fair trade” are big words online – but what does that mean day to day for us?
For Namaste Artisans, it looks like this:
-
Stable pricing, not constant haggling
We don’t chase the cheapest possible quote. We agree on prices that cover fair wages, safe workshops and realistic timelines. -
Regular, repeat orders
One large order is nice. Regular orders are what actually keep workshops running and artisans employed long-term. -
Quality checks at the source
Products are checked carefully in Nepal so we’re not wasting materials or shipping faulty items around the world. -
Transparent materials
We focus on wool and hemp, and we keep our material list deliberately short so we can track it properly.
When you see “handmade in Nepal” in our product descriptions, that isn’t a vague buzzword – it’s real people we know, visit and work with.
What we make: from Christmas trees to everyday shoes

Right now, you’ll find a few main families of products in our shop:
- Felt ornaments – animals, shapes and seasonal designs for Christmas trees, garlands and gifts.
- Felt kitchen & dining – coasters, trivets and table pieces that double as home decor.
- Cat caves and pet beds – wool felt hideaways in soft, rounded shapes for cats (and small dogs who like a den).
- Wool dryer balls – reusable wool balls to toss in the dryer to help separate laundry and reduce reliance on single-use sheets.
- Hemp footwear – everyday sneakers, boots and slippers with hemp uppers and natural rubber soles.
All of these are made with the same goal: useful, repeatable, fair.
How your order makes a difference
It’s easy to feel small as a customer. “Does my one order even matter?”
For us and our partners, it does.
Every order helps to:
- Keep local workshops in Nepal busier in the off-season, not just at Christmas.
- Support women-led teams who are often balancing work, caregiving and community roles.
- Show that there is real demand for eco-friendly, fair trade products, not just fast decor and fast fashion.
You get something you can use and gift for years. They get reliable work. That’s the trade we’re here for.
